World's Best Technologies Selects OPIC Member's Research

Toronto, Ontario, Canada, April 15, 2009

UOIT's Dr. Ed Waller and his Radiation Triage Mask (RTM) made the cut to be among 100 select participants in the 2009 World's Best Technologies (WBT) showcase in Arlington, Texas. A panel, selected from leading venture capitalists and Fortune 500 licensing scouts, screens technologies from top universities, labs, research institutions, and the private sector in the US and around the globe. Those selected for the showcase have an opportunity to present to over 100 venture capitalists and Fortune 500 licensors.

World's Best Technologies selections must demonstrate excellence along one or more of the following parameters:

  • a platform technology that could spawn many products;
  • first in the space having the potential to give rise to a whole new industry;
  • close to market, having few barriers remaining to commercial application.

The Radiation Triage Mask (RTM) has the ability to quickly and accurately identify the type and extent of exposure to radioactive isotopes caused by dirty bombs. The RTM's, first in the space, ease of use and accuracy allows EMS teams to administer treatment immediately. Immediacy is a requirement for the treatment to be effective. The RTM's design is based on an oxygen mask, a device quite familiar to EMS responders. When placed over the patient's nose and mouth, the device detects radiation from material present on the face. Facial readings are in direct proportion to the amount of radioactive isotopes inhaled.

The Office of Technology Transfer and Commercialization (OTTC) at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) is managing the commercialization process on behalf of Dr. Waller and co-authored Dr. Waller's WBT showcase application. Szanne McNutt, UOIT OTTC, has been managing this file and accompanied Dr. Waller to the WBT showcase. A worldwide patent application has been filed by UOIT's OTTC for the Radiation Triage Mask. The Radiation Triage Mask has been financially supported by the Ontario Partnership for Innovation and Commercialization OPIC, the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) and Defence Research and Development Canada (DRD).
