Following the successful workshop Marketing Your Research to Industry, Industry Liaison, Office of Research Services, will be offering the seminar Writing Collaborative Grant Proposals for the first time on March 6th, 2007.

This will be of interest to researchers who are planning to write a collaborative research proposal with an industrial partner. The emphasis will be on writing NSERC Collaborative Research and Development Grants and NSERC Strategic Project Proposals but reference will be made to the Ontario Centres of Excellence, National Centres of Excellence and IRAP. The seminar will provide useful information and guidance for any researcher considering a collaborative grant application.

This seminar has been created specifically for Ryerson researchers. Examples of Ryerson research projects and programs provided by Ryerson faculty will be used to demonstrate the concepts.

This is good timing if you are considering applying for the 2007 NSERC Strategic Project Grants (SPG) Program, which is due April 15, 2007.

The seminar will run from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and a light lunch will be served. The room holds approximately 50 people -- please rsvp to erskine@ryerson.ca to ensure your spot.

The Innovation Management Office is proud to present Marcel Mongeon, who will present a session on the hidden traps in Canada's intellectual property (i.e. copyright, patents, and others) laws.  All researchers need to know these issues to ensure that your rights to publish and otherwise deal with your research results are protected.  Students, staff, and faculty alike will benefit from this session. 

Marcel holds business and law degrees from McGill University and McMaster and lectures on intellectual property in McMaster's Michael G de Groote School of Business.  Marcel is a lawyer, a registered Trademark Agent, and has recently successfully completed the qualifying examinations to be registered in Canada as a Patent Agent.

This seminar is free of charge to Lakehead U faculty, students, and staff.  Refreshments will be served.

An Intellectual Property seminar will be hosted by Laurentian University on September 18th, 2006. Guest speakers Brian Isaac and Sally Hemming of Smart and Biggar, Canadas largest firm practicing exclusively in the area of intellectual property law, will lead the discussions.

Contents of the program include an overview of intellectual property, including a breakdown of the various types of rights and how they interact. Brian Isaac will discuss issues that should be considered in respect to creating, protecting and licensing intellectual property other than patents and in regards to enforcing intellectual property rights including patent rights.

Dr. Hemming will provide an overview of patent law, including the type of rights patents confer, what constitutes patentable subject matter, patenting and licensing strategies, and issues to keep in mind while making the invention, disclosing the invention and taking steps to protect the invention.

L'Université Laurentienne sera l'hôte dun exposé sur la propriété intellectuelle le 18 septembre, 2006. Les conférenciers invités seront Brian Isaac et Sally Hemming de Smart & Biggar, la plus grande société Canadienne pratiquant exclusivement dans le secteur de la loi de propriété intellectuelle.

Le programme inclut une vue d'ensemble de la propriété intellectuelle englobant divers types de droits et comment ils interagissent. Brian Isaac présentera les éléments qui devraient êtres considérés en ce qui a trait à la création, la protection et l'autorisation de la propriété intellectuelle autre que les brevets, ainsi quà l'application des droits de la propriété intellectuelle comprenant les droits conférés par les brevets.

Dr. Hemming fournira une vue d'ensemble des droits des brevets, y compris le type de droits accordés aux brevets, les différentes matières brevetables, les différentes stratégies de brevetage et d'autorisation, ainsi que des éléments à tenir en compte tout en faisant l'invention, en révélant l'invention et les mesures à suivre afin de protéger l'invention.
