Barbara Eccles, H.B.Sc., J.D.

Manager, Technology Transfer
Innovation Management Office, Lakehead University

Barb graduated with honours from Lakehead University in 1990 with an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Physics with Energy and FuelScience. After one year at McMaster University undergoing graduate studies, she attended law school at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1994 with a Juris Doctor degree. She was called to the Ontario Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor in 1996.

Barb joined Lakehead University in February 2000. Her duties include management of the Innovation Management Office and the University's intellectual property, assisting researchers in commercializing their inventions and transferring knowledge to private industry and government, and acting as a liaison between faculty, students, administration, private industry, investors, and government.

Prior to joining Lakehead University, Barb was employed as an associate lawyer at a local law firm, practicing primarily in the areas of corporate law, tax, and bankruptcy and insolvency, with an interest in management labour law.

Barb offers seminars and other public appearances periodically and on request regarding various topics related to technology transfer and the management of intellectual property to University faculty, staff, students, and the local community as a whole. Barb is a member of the Association of University Technology Managers, the Ontario Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Law Society of Upper Canada. She is on the Board of Directors of WestLink Innovation Network Ltd., OnSETT (the Ontario Society for Excellence in Technology Transfer), and Magnus Theatre, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary to Genesis Genomics Inc., and a member of the Thunder Bay Economic Development Coordination Committee. She is currently the President of Magnus Theatre.
